Helen Cosman (nee Roe) visited the county of Botosani for the first time in 1997 and following several short visits, chose to settle there in 1999, initially volunteering to work with a group of young children living in an institution in Dersca and later committing to support the same children when they were moved to institutions in Dorohoi and Botosani in 2001.
During the early years, funds were raised mainly through St John’s Community Church in Chase Terrace, Staffordshire. As the work developed and the network of supporters expanded, the importance of registering a charity in the UK was recognised.
Light for Children became a UK registered charity in 2007. Since then, the work of the charity has grown to embrace hundreds of local children and young people, both in institutions and families with low incomes.
